A vessel’s second life begins!

A vessel’s second life begins!

Once designed to transport heavy modules, the GMK-1 Deck Carrier is now being transformed into a powerful Sofie A Cable Laying Vessel platform, ready to lay the energy and communication lines of the future on the seabed.

At NAVTEK, having originally taken on the responsibility for this ship’s initial design, we are now proud to be part of a new and more advanced engineering journey: reinterpreting an existing platform, expanding its operational capabilities, and reshaping it for demanding open-sea missions.

Through this transformation, the Sofie A is being prepared to feature the following capabilities:

  • A robust offshore platform with main dimensions of 92.9 x 22 m
  • Integration of a cable carousel system
  • Equipped with single-cabin accommodation for 59 POB
  • Capability to perform DP2 operations under full-load conditions
  • Re-engineered to comply with Danish Flag, Unrestricted Navigation, SPS, and DP2 requirements
  • Adapted to its new operational profile with a bulbous bow, four bow thrusters, and two stern thrusters.

This project is more than just a conversion; it is the rewriting of a ship’s mission.

We sincerely thank J.A. Shipping A/S and Bureau Veritas for the trust and support they have extended to us in this powerful transformation project.

At NAVTEK, we do not just design ships; we transform existing potential into future operational capacity.
